Early Interceptive Orthodontics | Phase 1

What is early interceptive orthodontics (Phase I)?

Early interceptive orthodontics is a proactive approach to guiding a child’s smile while it’s still developing. By evaluating growth early, typically around age seven, we can identify potential concerns with jaw development, spacing, or bite alignment before they become more complex. Treatment at this stage isn’t always about starting braces right away, it’s about creating the right conditions for a healthy, natural smile to take shape over time.

At Gwinnett Orthodontics, Dr. Chakote takes a thoughtful, personalized approach to early care, using advanced imaging and careful planning to determine if and when intervention is beneficial. When needed, early treatment can help simplify future care, improve function, and support long-term oral health. It’s a more intentional way to guide your child’s smile as it continues to grow and develop. This is where smiles bloom.

Options For Every Budget

We understand that braces are a big investment. That’s why we offer a variety of flexible solutions to help you finance treatment on your terms.

The Benefits of Phase I Orthodontics

Correct Facial Asymmetries

Certain bites predispose a patient to facial asymmetry, which can become permanent after growth is completed. Early correction can prevent this.

Simplify Later Treatment

Early treatment to permit safe eruption of adult teeth can simplify treatment later, such as reducing the need for invasive procedures like 1) tooth exposure to help with eruption or 2) removal of adult teeth.

Healthier Teeth

Early crowding (misaligned teeth) trap food and are difficult to clean, increasing risks of cavities and gum disease. Early orthodontic treatment corrects alignment proactively, providing clearance to more easily clean teeth.

The American Board of Orthodontists recommends that children should have their first orthodontic evaluation around age seven, when early signs of crowding or bite issues can be identified.

Not always. Early interceptive orthodontics is about monitoring growth and addressing specific concerns when needed, not rushing into full treatment.

Early orthodontic treatment can guide jaw development, create space for incoming teeth, and help correct bite issues before they become more complex.

Treatment length varies, but Phase I treatment typically lasts 6 to 12 months, followed by a period of observation as your child continues to grow.

In some cases it can reduce or simplify future treatment, but many children will still benefit from a second phase of orthodontic care during the teen years.

The cost of orthodontic treatment depends on your specific needs, your goals, and the type of treatment that’s right for you.

At Gwinnett Orthodontics, we believe it’s just as important to make treatment feel manageable as it is to make it effective. That’s why we offer flexible, interest-free financing and work with most PPO insurance plans to help reduce out-of-pocket costs.

The best way to understand your investment is through a complimentary consultation, where we can evaluate your smile, walk you through your options, and design a plan that fits both your goals and your life.
